Vermont Yankee Receives Good Marks on NRC Inspection

"It will be sad indeed if Vermonters allow the rabid antinuclear coalition to successfully market their brand of fearmongering and shut down one of the best power sources Vermont has, now and in the future."

This is the concluding sentence in an Opinion piece published on October 8 by the Calendonian-Record. Read the full editorial here.

September Tax Revenues Higher Than Forecast but....

WCAX reports:

Vermont tax collections came in ahead of expectations last month but state officials remain worried about tough times ahead.

General fund revenues for September were 12 percent above the projections of the Douglas administration and the legislature. That puts tax collections for the first three months of the fiscal year 4.6 percent above target. But almost half of September's surplus came from a one-time court settlement.

VTRANS Will Hold Public Meetings on Long Range Transportation Plan

Providing useful and satsfactory transportation infrastructure is a basic and essential function of government and a key factor for a healthy economy. VTRANS has a draft plan for how Vermont should proceed for the next 25 years. Millions will be required to get our roads, bridges and other facilities in decent shape. Yet, the state has siphoned off millions from the transportation fund to other functions. Where will VTRANS get the money needed to accomplish their business plan?

10 Important Questions for Legislative Candidates

John McClaughry of the Ethan Allen Institute poses important questions that candidates for the Legislature should grapple with and have answers for. Most of the questions carry significant economic and/or tax implications.

VEH urges all candidates to review the VEH Candidate Pledge and sign it if you agree. Vermont simply cannot afford more of the same spending culture that has prevailed for far too long in Montpelier. Priorities are required for spending limited revenue on the most essential needs.

Mr. McClaughry posted his questions on Vermont Tiger.

Vermont Courts on Shorter Work Week (Just the beginning of the pain!)

Chris Campion at Vermont Tiger opines that the courts are working fewer hours to save money.  Consider that the soon-to-be-elected Legislature will convene looking at ~$100 Million shortage of revenue (or is it really more spending than necessary?). Some legislators likely will want to raise taxes, others will advocate spending from the rainy day fund. Those that think seriously about the dilemma will use more sense and realize this will be an opportunity to better prioritize expenditures and cut the budget commensurate with the shortfall.
